Bennett Leifer’s clients anticipated an effortless design project. After all, the full-floor Manhattan apartment they’d acquired was recently constructed, requiring only furnishings and finishing touches. But at their first concept meeting, the designer put forth a bold proposition. “Listen,” he told them, “you are either going to fire me or think I’m a genius.”

People don’t buy historic homes because they love dealing with old pipes, lead paint, and dated appliances—they seek them out because of the irreplaceable appeal that oozes from the details, like crown molding, patinated hardwood, and a closed floor plan. These aged accents tend to make the potential issues you might inherit worth it, so why would anyone want an old house that’s been completely gutted of all its character?

When conceiving a home that is not your primary place of residence, naturally there are considerations. How should it feel? Should it mirror your usual style? Which furnishings are essential and which are superfluous? These are all questions that Grisoro Studio founder and principle Gabriela Gargano asked her clients, a young.

Inspired by the abundant natural light and the open, angular floor plan, Alexander Collier and Cassandra Beaudry of Beaudry Collier Design sought to anchor the space with modern shapes, colours and textures. The iconic Sofa 190 from Pierre Augustin Rose, upholstered in a cream boucle, forms a sculptural dialogue with a custom-designed walnut dining table that subtly converges with the architecture’s irregular angles.

It is said that it only takes a few seconds to determine whether a home is the one. In this 335-square-metre, four-bedroom New York penthouse apartment, there’s no doubt that the stunning panorama was the selling point. Overlooking one of the world’s most fascinating skylines, the penthouse is situated atop the Rose Hill luxury tower – in the heart of the NoMad neighbourhood – that pays homage to New York City’s Art Deco history.

Gabriela Gargano and Clayton Orrigo have known each other since high school. Not only have they remained friends over the years, but their careers have found a nice synergy together too, as they both deal with beautifully designed spaces—Gabriela as an interior designer and founder of Grisoro Designs, and Clayton as cofounder of The Hudson Advisory Team.

Shawn Corey Carter, aka Jay-Z, is perhaps best known as a superstar rapper. He’s earned 22 Grammy Awards and, according to Forbes, he’s the first hip-hop billionaire. The husband of Beyoncé can claim equal fame as a global mogul. Roc Nation, the entertainment company he founded in 2008 as a joint venture with Live Nation, encompasses every aspect of the modern business.

Doors will soon be open to the 49th edition of the Kips Bay Decorator Show House New York, where the work of 24 top designers and architects is on marvelous display tomorrow through May 28. This year, the show house inhabits a 12,000-square-foot, 1904 neo-Georgian town house located at 125 East 65th Street.

The other day, I was waiting for a text to let me know to leave the house to meet a person for a thing, but the person was late, or being made late, and so for about 20 minutes I was in a sort of limbo, a purgatory state between ready-to-go and out-the-door. Confronted with a similar scenario, some people would respond to emails, shuffle through Spotify, catch up on “Little Women: L.A.” — you know, the Styrofoam packing peanuts of life.

Slowear is one of the more unlikely menswear concepts to emerge from the Italian manufacturing industry. It’s not so much a brand as a philosophy. Like the parallel credo in Italian cooking, slow food, Slowear is based on the notion that quality rather than speed, and expertise rather than market domination, make for much better products.
New York City–based interior designer Emma Beryl’s latest clients live in a quintessential Upper East Side building (think: Charlotte York-Goldenblatt’s address in Sex and the City). There’s an elevator operator, a formal doorman, and 1920s prewar charm galore.
Picture an archetypal Upper East Side apartment building and the tony residences immortalised in recent television history (Gossip Girl, Sex and the City) will likely come to mind. Hatted doormen and White-gloved elevator operators are the gatekeepers of well proportioned apartments with historic features and impressive city views (the higher, the better).
Located at 333 Central Park West, The Turin is a stately apartment building bordering New York City’s fabled park that has seen many residents of different fortunes come and go since it was unveiled in 1909. The work of architect Albert Joseph Bodker, its beige brick facade is a play on Italian Renaissance style with deep courtyard gardens.
